What a beautiful name, right ?
Drosophila melanogaster, according to wikipedia, means in greek something that could translate as : dark-bellied dew lover ! That already tells everything about this little fly, no ?
It’s been 5 years since I met the fruit fly in a research lab. I remember that I had never visited a fly lab before, and I imagined they kept the flies in these big nets shaped as bubbles, and catched them like the butterflies …
After 5 years, I know a little bit more about this cute little insect. People think I’m crazy when I tell this, but yes, I think Drosophila is cute.
See, this little bug reproduces like crazy, and in 10 days, you can get the adults children from 2 parents. It also possess these very special chromosomes called balancers, with enable the geneticist to track genes from generation to generation.
These flies like to eat rotten fruit, and swim in vinegar. In the lab, we give them a kind of polenta (cornflour, sugar, agar agar) to eat, and if they’re really hungry, we add baker’s yeast.
Here is a little tip from an insider if you want to get rid of the fruit fly at home : Take a glass, and add 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water, and few drops of dishwashing soap. The flies will be attracted by the smell, but will drawn. It’s a little cruel, but hey, who wants 1000 fruit flies in the apple basket at home ?
Anyway, there is great chance that I will talk more about the little create in the future, this was just a little introduction !
